Just Because You’re an Introvert Doesn’t Mean You’re Boring

Hey guys, how’re you doing? So, last night, my thought was all over the place; I was overthinking stuff and somehow got here. Am I boring? What is boring? How am I boring?

What is boring, anyway?

boring /ˈbɔːrɪŋ/

not interesting; tedious.

So, most of the time, I’m called boring and I’ve always believed it until I stopped one day (which was just yesterday, lol) and asked myself, what the hell is boring anyway? Then, I started to analyze myself, why do people (who really don’t know me) say I’m boring?

Here is a list of things I know I enjoy doing.

• Read a book
• Watch a movie (when I’m in the mood)
• Listen to music
• Eat junk food
• Paint/Draw (not an artist though but I enjoy it, keeps me sane)
• Hang out with my friends
• Waste hours and hours on social media.

Hours by FKA Twigs just started playing, oh my God. I love this one.

• Go to the library (did this a lot when I was younger, Children’s centre library, UNN was my favorite thing)
• Hike (with my father, don’t do it much anymore)
• Go to the movies, when I’m not broke (thank you so much Spar! For being closer to UNEC)
• Sports
• Write
• Laugh at memes
• Relate to memes
• Show my friends memes to laugh at
• Daydream
• Travel (If I had the money. Lmao, right now, it’s just wanderlust-ing)
• Stalk girls on social media and admire their beauties.
• Clean (like my room, wardrobe, sweep, wash the bathroom, practically do anything relating to making a place clean cause it makes me feel like I’m in a control of my life, at least)

And that’s it. I think, yeah, pretty much.

Now, someone meets me, we get to hangout and then s/he asks me, what do you enjoy doing? I mention all these I listed above and they go “Oh, my God! Get a life” “That’s so boring”

I’m just going to smile weakly and agree with that person because yeah, it’s boring. But, I was overthinking yesterday, my thoughts all over the place and somehow, it got here: What is boring anyway?

“How am I boring?”

Then it clicked, I’m an introvert in an extroverted world, Nigeria for that matter. Boring to an extrovert is interesting to an introvert because reading and listening to music is fucking interesting, interestingly (this is a word?!) awesome.

C’mon, watching movies too, is interesting, I mean, don’t tell me that you didn’t enjoy Avengers: Endgame or any of the Princess Diaries, Lord of the Rings and probably any other movie, show or cartoon you’ve ever seen.

You jam your head and whine and your waist and bust out awesome dance (which is fun and interesting to do) moves, to music you love because you find them interesting, right?  Some songs would make you cry sometimes but it’s all worth it. I’m currently jamming my head now to Him and I by Halsey and G-Eazy.

Okay, so, moving on. For as long as I’ve known myself, I’ve always agreed with people I am boring. Thinking about it last night made me realize I have a handful of friends who are like me, who do all/most of these things I enjoy doing and when I hang out with them, there’s energy, mad energy.

This is what you came for by Rihanna and Calvin Harris just came on. I miss Rihanna, somebody pay her to release an album already, please😭.

We get to talk about the things we love and do things we like to do. To somebody else, an extrovert to be precise, we’d be boring; we are boring. Because this is what not boring is, this is what interesting is, to an extrovert, to someone…normal;

• Partying
• Pool parties
• Going out, to party?
• Visiting a friend
• Going to concerts
• Wasting time on Social Media (like me, yay)
• Hiking
• Talking a lot (can’t sit with this kind of person in comfortable silence)
• Going out to eat
• Clubbing
• Playing video games
• Traveling
• Take pictures
• Sports
• Reading a book (if it’s their thing)

• Going out
• Go

• Spot?

Yeah, that’s pretty much it.

I’m going to agree with them, that’s all pretty interesting. In a country like Nigeria? Yeah, it’s much needed to go out once in a while, it’s needed. So, this is everything someone, who calls me boring, does, that is…fun. I’m going to compare this list and mine and find out what’s missing.

Alright? Puts on imaginative glasses.

Okay, I don’t party. Strike one.

I rarely go out. If it isn’t important, for a movie, food or anything relating to my…interests, I stay in. Strike two.

Pool Party, never been. Don’t know if I’d ever be. Strike three. I’m freaking out! Wait, not literally.

Brings us back to the question…what is boring?

Going to answer that from my, analysis?

Boring is…not going out to have fun! Boring is when you don’t party, boring is when you stay inside doing what I enjoy doing and people don’t see you for hours and hours.

Alright. I’m going to pause and ask my (introverted) friend if I’m boring.

She’s taking too long to answer, but I want to bet she’s going to say no, which is going to prove my point…. She said No.

This is what boring is.

Do I agree with this?

No. Nah.

Then what is boring? Who is boring?

I wanted to say tech geeks, math nerds, scientists, librarians…but I paused and thought about it.

They find it interesting, yeah? They find numbers and mysteries and wires and bots and computers interesting. Hell, I used to, when five-year-old me thought she’d be some mad lab scientist one time.

Writers? I think they’re freaking awesome, wonders of the universe, how do they come up with all these words that can satisfy or displease thousands and billions of people? And I can assure you they don’t spend most of their time in labs working or on their desks, writing.

So, what is boring? Who is boring? Am I boring?

Seriously, I want to know. I researched on it and it’s just this one that I agree with.

This sums it up in a kind of way, can someone learn something new from me? Hell yes, I’ve given my friends advises and tips before from books I read or stories I read online.  Can someone learn something new from a writer? Yes. Tech geek? Is this even question? Yes. Lmao.

So, if we can learn something new from people who enjoy doing things that don’t include partying or playing video games or engaging in sports, and talking a lot, then who is boring? What is boring anyway?

I’m currently on holiday now and when my friends ask me, what’s up, I reply the holiday is boring or I’m bored.

Why?

Because I’m not doing anything. All I’ve literally done so far this holiday is waste my time on social media and sleep, sleep, sleep. I haven’t opened my Anybooks app since I got home. Can somebody learn anything (new) from this?

No.

That’s what boring is.

Boring is being lazy, for no reason at all. Boring is just existing (sometimes, I do this). Boring is not doing anything at all. Boring is simply just breathing, closing your eyes and breathing, doing only one thing all the time. That’s freaking boring, I’m going to agree.

If all I did was scroll through my social media feed(s) and listen to music, then that would have been boring. But I don’t only that, I read, I hike, I clean, I love to talk about things with my friends, I enjoy drawing/painting (not an artist though). I’m not boring just because I don’t go to a party or anywhere, that is loud or lively.

 Just because my Facebook (why does auto-correct capitalize social media words?) feed isn’t filled with celebrity gossips and dramas doesn’t mean I’m boring. Someone actually told me my feed was boring cause all I have on it is memes, write-ups I share, photographs, dogs, stories and music, oh, c’mon. All that is boring?

Yeah, okay. People think sadist mean someone who doesn’t smile all the time or isn’t fun to be with. No, that’s not who or what a sadist is, a sadist is someone who derives pleasure, satisfaction, joy, from someone else’s pain. You get? I’m talking, Christian Grey but without asking for your consent, serial killers, cold blooded murders, Nigerian lecturers…these people are sadist and boring. Seriously, who hurts other people for fun? It’s boring.

And you put me in that category? I’m a hopeless romantic for God’s sake. Speaking of, Love by Lana Del Rey just started playing.

Do you enjoy doing stuff that doesn’t include partying or going out much? Do you enjoy the things I do? Do you enjoy other things that you know is interesting to you and someone else? Are you not an extrovert? Are you an ambivert? Introvert?

Do you think you’re boring?

I don’t think you are. I hope this post helps you to start seeing yourself in a different light. You aren’t boring if enjoy doing other things that seem interesting to you and (probably) someone else.

I don’t think I am. Lol, maybe, sometimes but writing this is going to make me start thinking otherwise from now on. Hope you do too.
